Bruce Lee's Martial Art
Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Jeet Kune Do is a martial arts form that was founded in 1967 by the infamous Bruce Lee. The name of this martial art, translated into English, means: “way of the intercepting fist.” (Special note - In 2004, the Bruce Lee Foundation decided to rename it to "Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do" to refer to Lee's Chinese given name - Jun Fan. So technically now the literal translation is "Bruce Lee's Way of the Intercepting Fist." ) This is quite an appropriate description as most of the techniques associated with this martial art utilize “on guard” positions. One cannot know or understand "Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do" without first studying Bruce Lee and his philosophy about martial arts. Those philosophies can best be illustrated by the following story: Once while practicing European wrestling, Lee was pinned by an opponent, who then asked Lee what he would do if he found himself in that situation in a real fight. Lee replied, "Well, I'd bite you, of course". The primary theory of Jeet Kune Do is that a fighter should do "whatever is necessary" to defend himself, regardless of where the techniques come from. Lee's goal was to break down the limiting factors in traditional styles, and seek a fighting style which he believed could only be found within the event of a fight. To farther illustrate Lee's views, in a 1971 Black Belt Magazine article, Lee said: "Let it be understood once and for all that I have NOT invented a new style, composite or modification. I have in no way set Jeet Kune Do within a distinct form governed by laws that distinguish it from 'this' style or 'that' method. On the contrary, I hope to free my comrades from bondage to styles, patterns and doctrines." Lee is also often quoted as saying: "Use only that which works, and take it from any place you can find it." Bruce Lee believed that his new martial arts form should be looked upon as a "pathway", and NOT the ultimate "goal" of any practitioner. Meaning simply, that students are expected to modify, add, and delete any aspects of Jeet Kune Do until they develop something that is uniquely their own. Any technique, from any martial art, can be studied and incorporated into any student's "unique style". Thereby, the "individual" becomes, through his own process of self-discovery, his "teacher". Needless to say that when Jeet Kune Do was first introduced in 1967, these ideas and concepts were quiet revolutionary and soundly rejected by some of the Masters and Grand Masters of the more established martial arts. Because many of these traditional arts are based in religious or deeply philosophic beliefs it was accepted that they "require" complete understanding of, and "adherence" to, certain rituals, rules, training methods, and forms. The idea that a martial arts student could "do and study whatever he wants" was ludicrous. However Jeet Kune Do was being presented by "Bruce Lee", and even then, as now that name carried a "ton" of weight in the martial arts world. Of course now the concept of cross training has been introduced to and practiced in many fighting styles. Bruce Lee is considered by UFC president Dana White as the "father of mixed martial arts". Many consider Jeet Kune Do to be the precursor of Mixed Martial Arts because of its synthetic nature.
