Capoeira Martial Arts
Are you familiar with the martial art called Capoeira? Capoeira (pronounced Capo-wa-ra ) is a martial art that was started in Brazil by African slaves during the Colonial period. Capoeira can loosely be translated as fight dances. Practitioners of the art are called capoeiristas. The history of Capoeria is rich and culturally significant. After slavery was abolished, the popularity of "fight dancing" grew as many former slaves joined gangs out of necessity. At one time Capoeira was even outlawed by the government of Brazil as they believed it played a large part in the unrest of that era. This forced the capoeirists to practice their art underground. Today Capoeira, is a fun and exciting sport, with music as an integral part. Considered a Brazilian art form and martial art; it features strong aerobic and dance elements. It is a mixture of body and soul, fighting and dancing, of musical instruments and loud singing. It requires the use of mental, physical and emotional agility. The music can be infectious. The emphasis is not on how well you sing or perform but on how much energy you commit to the effort. Capoeira is a harmony of forces that gives it's practitioners power, flexibility, endurance and self-discovery. Participants form a circle, while two people enter the ring and exhibit their skills by eluding and striking their opponent. However the blows are not 'hard' landed. What results is a highly aerobic, and fun mock fight with some very impressive moves. This fun martial art is growing in popularity as an alternative to aerobics.
