Mountain Biker's Paradise

Summit County Colorado

Underneath all the snow on those magnificent ski trails lies a system of biking trails to die for!

The names - Breckenridge, Keystone and Copper Mountain - conjure up images of deep powder and long lazy runs for skiing enthusiasts, but for those that love biking, there exists in Colorado another sports encounter that is nothing short of heaven.

Located between 9,000 and 12,000 feet in elevation, Summit county bike trails are guaranteed to present both visitors and locals with spectacular terrain and stunning vistas. There is an unbeatable combination of back country and paved paths that will delight beginners and die hard bikers alike. Biking enthusiasts of all abilities will enjoy the seemingly endless variety of riding options ranging from smooth dirt roads to rugged single tracks.

Rarely can you expect to ride Summit county's dirt trails before late May. Wet and soggy conditions make trails vulnerable to damage. During early season only the paved trails are rideable. But during June through early October, long sunny days and cool evenings make biking the Summit a pedalist's dream come true.

Summit county is truly a cycling friendly community. All of those winter ski shops convert over to renting bikes of all types and quality - adult bikes, children's bikes, two person bikes and high-end tech bikes. You name it and it can be rented in this alpine setting.

Getting around the mountains on transportation other than bikes is also easy in Summit county Colorado. The 'Summit Stage' is a free bus service, equipped with bike racks to transport passengers with bicycles to all the various neighborhood communities and the many trail heads.

Probably best of all - Breckenridge, Keystone and Copper mountain - all offer a 'lift-serviced' mountain biking trail system. After paying a small fee, attendants load your bike for you when you board the lift and head up the mountain to the 10-11,000 foot level and breath taking scenery. As you debark attendants will again unload your bike and present it to you for your slowly winding decent through the pine forests and panoramic views.

However, riding up and gently coasting down, might be considered 'sissy' to some. For those more rugged individuals Summit county is rife with back country trails. Peru Creek, Webster Pass, Montezuma Loop, West Ridge, and Gold Run are but a few of the trails that will offer a serious 'challenge' to even the most seasoned cyclist.

Needless to say, is that if you are really 'into' cycling, a visit to Summit county Colorado will seem like the trip of a lifetime. See you there!

Contributor's Note

The author moved to Summit country Colorado fifteen years ago and has never regretted one moment of it. In the mountains we have a saying - "Move here for the winters, stay here for the summers."
