Why Navajo Rugs are so Expensive. NOT!
By Dewitt Mosby
Of all the Native American Indians, the Navajo are with out a doubt the most artistically gifted. When it comes to creating eye dazzling works of art, as a culture they seem to have an inherited talent. Their "horsehair" pottery is breathtakingly beautiful. They weave intricately designed baskets so tight that they hold water. Their museum quality sand paintings are legendary. Their colorful "kachina" dolls are highly sought after by collectors worldwide. And wearing an exquisite piece of silver and turquoise Navajo jewelry is a fashion statement by itself. But perhaps the talent for which the Navajo nation is most noted is their finely crafted woolen rugs. Indeed, top quality Navajo rugs rival Persian rugs in both beauty and desirability. It would seem that in certain parts of the southwestern U.S. that every other home has at least one Navajo rug on display. Smart decorators know that a well placed Navajo rug will set off any room. The only complaint I hear concerning Navajo rugs is "Why are they so expensive?" First - put aside the fact that high-end rugs are seen as investment assets because they go up in value. The truth is - once you know a little about their creation, you will realize that Navajo rugs represent a tremendous value for their price. A top quality Navajo rug, by a well known weaver in the 4' by 6' range may sell for $5000 to $8000 from a reputable dealer. However, the weaver doesn't get that much, because the trading post has to make a profit to stay in business. But let's focus on the effort and skills required to make that rug. Did you know that the Navajo raise their own sheep? They shear them, then hand spin and hand dye their own yard. After that they will sit laboriously hour after hour at their homemade loom for 3 to 6 months just to weave ONE rug. For which they may receive $3000 to $5000 (that is - IF they are well known enough, most Navajo weavers do not command this much). Still...not too bad you say! Is it? How much do you make over that same six months? |
